Daydreams

A daydream is a fantasy or a reverie, dreamlike musings that pass through the mind while awake.

Daydreams are internal movies that individuals play out for themselves while awake. Because the daydreamer is not asleep, these inner world emanations feel considerably less wild and more under the control of our minds than, say, sleep dreams. Daydreams seem to be produced by a more active partnership between the conscious and unconscious aspects of mind. They are typically not nearly as vivid as sleep dreams. Because they occur in the waking state, they are much easier to recall than sleep dreams.

Daydreams can be understood as a picture show of our hopes and aspirations that we entertain when awake. Daydream scenarios are frequently scripted to feature the daydreamer in a top-billing role. Our daydreams often show us situations we would like to find ourselves participating in, and in roles of success , power, and competency. Daydreams are used to compensate for felt or perceived lacks in waking life.

Daydreams inherently are about change. Whatever is troublesome about our waking life we compensate for in our daydreams. Daydreams often deal with successful solutions to problems in our waking lives. Any obstacles and impediments in a daydream scenario are heroically and elegantly overcome. The nuts and bolts logistics of change are of no significance in daydreams. This is a world of ease, which explains why they are so appealing.

Because of this, daydreams are often seen as frivolous. Daydreams are pejoratively called pipedreams, inner wishes that have no hope of ever being realized. But their content can give us insight into our inner needs and wants, that we may act upon to realize. While daydreams can become a way of avoiding unpleasant outer world situations. They can be the first inner prompting that something in our waking life or in our attitude needs to change. They can be understood as brainstorming, where any and every idea and wish is brought up, regardless of how realizeable. Then their content can be more rationally analyzed. They can also be the seed of change for a more coherent life, if nurtured with attention and care.

Since daydreams are typically pleasant, placing the daydreamer in pleasing scenarios, often in stark contrast to less-than-pleasant waking life realities, they lend themselves to being used as an escape. An habitual and unmindful daydreamer can use them as a numbing substance to avoid dealing with unpleasant waking life situations. from the challenges of being in the world.

But interacting with them Dreamfully, that is, Mindfully, Heartfully, Bodyfully and Soulfully, daydreams can be a source of life-enhancing information. They can serve as an initial signal indicating areas in our life that need change. Daydreams challenge us to understand them and then to manifest them in our waking lives.
